REM Sleep Disorder is Hazardous to Your Health

REM sleep disorder means that you do not fall into the cycle of sleep where dreams take place. For people lucky enough to reach this state of sleep it means they wake feeling revitalized. For the rest of the population it means a horrible night sleep and miserable days.

When in REM sleep there are changes your body goes through. You will have erratic breathing, your blood pressure rises, paralysis of limbs and higher than normal brain activity. While this may sound a bit threatening it happens to everyone who gets a good night sleep. People with REM sleep disorder do not experience the paralysis of limbs. This can be dangerous because a person can act out their dreams or worse their nightmares.

The symptoms of REM sleep disorder:

• Screaming
• Talking
• Punching
• Kicking
• Sitting upright
• Walking in their sleep

There are preventative measures to take until you get this sleep disorder controlled:

1. Clear any hurtful articles.
2. Lower your mattress to the floor.
3. If you have a partner and are afraid of hurting them, sleep alone.

This may seem hard to do but unless you can manage your REM sleep disorder it is for your safety and the safety of those around you.

The first thing some people want to try is a doctors’ prescription or over-the-counter medicine but that is not the only option. These drugs can lose their ability to work in weeks and can become addictive. You can also experience side effects the morning after taking them.

REM sleep disorder is an extremely irritating condition but there are some things you can change that may lessen or end your problem.

• Avoid all nicotine and caffeine after sunset.
• Go to bed only if you are exceptionally tired.
• Get daily exercise during the day.
• Do not drink alcohol at night.

If you are still awake after 20 minutes or so, get up and leave your bedroom. Don’t go back unless you are very groggy.

These changes to your lifestyle should give you relief but if you find they do not help there are other ways to find your best sleep aids. You may want to try herbs for insomnia. These can also help with REM sleep disorder and they do not have side effects.
